Since as early as Lori can remember, her life has been filled with loneliness and sadness. Her father was an alcoholic and divorced her mother when Lori was three. Then, her mom’s new boyfriend sexually abused Lori from the time she was three until she was nine, when he was sent to prison.

Moving in with her father wasn’t an option because of his alcoholism, so he sent her to live with an aunt. “I never truly lived with her,” Lori says sadly. “It was a just a place for him to drop me off.”

Lori dropped out of high school, got pregnant and gave birth to her son six days before her 18th birthday.

You might not have seen Phil Burkey if you drove past Faith Mission last summer, but he was probably there.

Burkey, who worked most mornings in the garden next to the railroad tracks, obscured by the fence and slope of the hill, is the driving force behind the garden that puts fresh, quality food on the plates of those most in need in our community.

Burkey knows about that need. He was a resident at the mission for about two years starting in 2009. “When we started the garden (in 2010), we asked for those that wanted to help, and Phil was one of the first to step up,” said Mike Perez, the mission’s resource and development director.
